Freedom, fairness, regulation (voters ppt freely)
Universal suffrage (all adults can vote (one person = one vote))
Party and candidate compete (everyone has = opp to learn
Direct democracy +
+People only have to obey laws they make themselves
+Has educational benefits bc people are more involved
+Reduces dependency on politicians so less corruption
Increase legitimacy because people will take responsibility for themselves
Direct democracy -
-Only achievable in small communities - people do not have the time anymore
-Makes politics a job for everyone (most people have other duties so not enough time)
-Very difficult to make complex decisions
-Can engage people too much and create divisions in society
Representative democracy -
-People have little meaningful control due to government (2019 47% of people felt they had no influence)
-People can switch off from politics bc less involved (in 2019 30% of people never discussed politics)
Higher depending on politicians so more corruption (2019 63% felt system rigged to benefit rich)
Voter turnout is low (overall satisfaction on downward trend at 25% in 2019)
Representative democracy +
+Only form of democ that functions for medium to large societies
+More effecient bc citizens relieve of day to day governing
+Places decision making in more expert hands (Especially lords)
+Distances citizens from politics so more likely to accept compromise
