PSYCOPATHOLGY
DEPRESSION
characteristics
behavioural (impaired sleep, over or under eating)
cognitive (negative thoughts, irrational beliefs)
emotional (aggressive outbursts, helplessness)
Elis' ABC model
-
ABC - A. (activating event) B (belief) C (if belief is irrational will lead to consequence) this will then cause the person to get into a negative loop
irrational beliefs - minimisation (reduce or ignore the positive aspects of a situation) and maximisation (over exaggerate the negatives)
-
Mustabatory thinking - this is the belief that you MUST be able to do soemthing or they consider themselves a failure
Beck's negative triad
3 individual thoughts that someone has to display in order to be depressed (negative view of yourself, world and future)
AO3
reductionist, ignoring other things that can cause depression (biological, genetic)

OCD
CHARACTERISTICS
behavioural (compulsive behaviour, ritualistic routines)
cognitive (obsessive thoughts, awareness of irrationality)
emotional (extreme anxiety, helplessness)
BIOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS
- too much dopamine in the orbatal frontal cortex
- GENETIC CONT gene (this is used to maintain dopamine levels in the brain, people with OCD tend to have a mutation of the gene so the dopamine levels are not regulated)
- GENETIC SERT gene (processes serotonin and that people with OCD have an issue with that gene preventing it from processing)
-
A03
- Difficult to prove the worry circuit happens because you cant see
- fails to consider environmental triggers that will cause OCD
- practice application - helped us discover drug treatments that have helped with the neurotransmitters in the brain
TREATMENTS
- SSRIs - selective serotonin re uptake inhibiters (increase the serotonin in the caudate nucleus) - they do this by blocking re uptake receptors, forces serotonin to build up in the synapse, this will increase the serotonin that flows through the body - improves function of the caudate nucleus
