ONTOLOGY AND OTHER METHAPYSICIAL VIEWS
Four Major Branches of Philosophy
Logic
Ethics
Epistemology
Metaphysics
Alternative Considerations
Some scholars include aesthetics or axiology (divided into aesthetics and ethics) as additional branches.
Metaphysics
Deals with general and abstract questions about existence, space, time, the existence of God, and the immortality of the human soul.
Aristotle’s Division of Metaphysics
Special Metaphysics: Includes cosmology, psychology, and theodicy (natural theology).
General Metaphysics (Ontology): Sometimes referred to as ontology.
Ontology
Derived from Greek words "onto" (being) and "logos" (knowledge or study).
Studies beings in their ultimate causes, reasons, and principles through reason alone.
Application of Ontology
Sociology: Social ontology explores social facts, social constructs, and the nature, dynamics, and characteristics of social groups.
Education: Ontology of learning refers to worldview and its impact on understanding the world. Teaching differing facts based on alternative ontologies can reduce fruitless arguments and foster understanding of diverse worldviews.
Research: Helps researchers recognize certainty about the nature and existence of objects, truth claims about reality, legitimacy of what is real, and dealing with conflicting ideas of reality.
