Advantages
A Channel of Communication: Social media provides an excellent opportunity to stay connected with peers and their teachers. These bonds may last even after graduation.
Promotes Sharing of Ides: Social media provides an excellent opportunity to stay connected with peers and their teachers. These bonds may last even after graduation.
Benefits Introverted Students: Students who otherwise have difficulty in opening up and expressing their thoughts can get involved in social interactions. Introverted students need not actively interact, but through media consumption, they can still receive updates about their friends’ day-to-day activities.
Encourages Global Connections: Social media also opens the door for students to get connected to student fraternities globally. Students can know about international curriculum and educational practices. This expands their horizons beyond their local education system and they can ‘immerse’ themselves (even if temporarily) in another culture.
Provides ways to receive Instant Help: You can share your issues and problems with the online community under the cloak of anonymity and can seek guidance, support and solidarity.
Disadvantages
A Source of Distraction: Social media is undoubtedly one of the most significant distractions of modern days. We are sure that most of the parents and teachers will also agree to it. Given that each user’s social media algorithm is based on his/her unique preferences, students may find themselves sucked into social media scrolling for hours on end.
Detachment from the Real World: Students who spend too much time in the virtual world interacting with unknown faces might have difficulty in communicating and interacting with people in the real world. This includes being indifferent to facial expressions and common cultural norms.
Cyberbullying: Social media websites have been notorious when it comes to crime like cyberbullying and violent games. Games like blue whale challenge and momo challenge had claimed the lives of several students globally. Cyberbullying is an alarming trend and students send hurtful messages to scar their fellow peers - oftentimes under a pseudonym.
Glamourising Drugs and Alcohol: Social media is not the only source which shows drugs and alcohol in a glamourised form. Social media platforms pose a threat if students start following kids who use drugs and alcohol. This may eventually influence other students to follow suit
