Cold
REASONS
The Rhinovirus gets into the body through mouth, nose or eyes

SYMPTOMS

Blocked nose, sneezing and coughing, a headache, mild fever
The symptoms usually appear gradually, over a few days
TREATMENT

STEPS:
1 Increasing vitamin C intake (side-effect: increasing the risk of kidney stones)
2 Taking a nasal decongestant (helps open the nasal passages).
3 Cough supressants and expectorants
4 Drinking plenty of water (the over-the-counter medication may dry the rest of your body)
5 Getting plenty of rest (overexerting oneself will only prolong the cold)
6 Sneezing into one's elbow to avoid spreading of germs (The Dracula Cough)

The infectious period varies, usually lasts 4-7 days after symptoms first begin
Flu
REASONS
Getting the influenza virus which has more than 100 subtypes. In addition, flu's genetic code allows it to mutate quickly

SYMPTOMS

a sudden high temperature, an aching body, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, loss of appetite, diarrhoea or tummy pain...
The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active.
TREATMENT
Resting, keeping warm, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen, drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration
