Threats
Malware (any kind of malicious program installed on a computer system with intention to cause damage or steal information)
Spyware - malware packaged with other software such as free software which users download. Gathers info and sends to criminal.
Trojans - Programmes which trick users into installing or clicking on links which are seen as useful, yet can actually be harmful. They can delete files and use backdoors to send screenshots and key presses to a hackers computer, allowing them to access personal info.
Viruses - Computer program hidden within another program. The virus code is only run when host program is executed.
Worms
- Similar to virus but does not need to be hosted in another program.
- Create a 'back door' so that hackers can take over infected computer.
- Self-replicating, using up computers resources, making other programs slower.
- Spread by sending emails to address books.
Ransomware - malware interfering with users operation of computer unless sum of money is paid. (hostage)

Brute Force Attacks
- Where a hacker attempts to crack a password systematically with number and letters.
- Use automated software to test millions of combinations every second.
- dictionary attack - lists of previously cracked passwords are tried before any other password.
