Pidgins and Creoles
Pidgins - A simplified lang that emerges between 2 or more groups which do not share a common lang
- Pidgins cease to exist when original purpose disappears
- 17-19 century slaves taken to Caribbean, Slave trades mixed up slaves so no shared lang for comm to prevent planning. Only common lang was that of the traders (French, British Eng, or Dutch). So pidgins emerged
Creoles - A language that originated from a pidgin that has become nativized and is acquired by children as primary language
- Creoles have limited vocab, simple grammatical structure, and a narrow range of functions and serve a practical use
- E.g. Chinook Jargon used by American Indians when trading
Viv Edwards, Jamaican Eng - Stereotyping leads to features of creole to be stigmatised + develop connotations of low academic ability.
