The inspector questions each member of the birling family
revealing their guilt and how their actions contributed to Eva Smith's death, making them take responsibility.

Arthur birling
"I can't accept any responsibility" Mr Birling does not accept or take any responsibility for his actions that contributed towards Eva Smith's death. This shows his lack of morality and compassion that he has for others.
"If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we'd had anything to do with, it would be very awkward, wouldn't it?" This quote tells us how Mr Birling rejects the idea of taking responsibilties for his actions

The higher class in society has more responsibility, and the lower class has less responsibility as they can not care for themselves, the higher class is supposed to support and help the lower class with things such as charities, to make sure that they have equal opportunities in life

there is a class divide between the higher and lower people in society. The Birling's treatment of Eva Smith is as a result of them being an upper class family and Eva being a working class woman

his quote from mrs birling symbalises the extreme class divide that existed in edwardian pre war society
Priestley wants to expose how class inequality exists, and he wants to emphasise this to his audience. Priestley argues that the upper class maintain the class system because it benefits them, allowing them to live in ignorance of how the working classes struggle.

Mr Birling - " just let me finish, Eric. " shows Eric is often ignored and doesn't get his chance to talk treated like he isn't intelligent enough or isn't treated mature enough yet.
