Aging & Cognition
-
Descartes-link consciousness to brain (substance dualism) Physical matter versus consciousness (thinking stuff) stated that consciousness cannot be physical
-
Materialism-everything, including mental events, is composed of physical matter, that the mind solely exists as a result of the brains process
Panpsychism- the possibility of all matter, both living and non-living is conscious.

thalamic intralaminar nuclei activity: role in awareness, conscious experience, arousal, sleep, vigilance, as well as in cognitive, and sensory processing.

Variability- "Mean" differences based on executive function. Circadian arousal patterns (time of day)
Design & Sampling: Over representation of WEIRD (westernized, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) less neurotic

Brain Changes :explode:
Prefrontal Cortex (PFC)
Anterior-posterior continuum. Anterior regions especially susceptible to aging. Deteriorates more rapidly than other regions of the brain (gray matter-V/D/T/S) and (white matter-V, hyperintensities/tract integrity) linked to cognition in healthy older adults. As PFC gray matter decreases, attention, working memory, and episodic memory decreases.
fMRI shows regions active based on age. Little activation in posterior regions. Possible compensation for older brains, whiles other suggest due to inefficiency.
Medial Temporal Cortex
Hippocampus-episodic memory. Vol. MRI shows decline in volume with aging. Have been linked to episodic memory declines. Reduced activation in MT accompanies poor behavioral performances, but older adults with mild cog. impairment have shown increase in activation of this area (odd)
