The Happy Planet Index (HPI) is an index of human well-being and environmental impact that was introduced by the New Economics Foundation in 2006. Each country's HPI value is a function of its average subjective life satisfaction, life expectancy at birth, and ecological footprint per capita.
Weaknesses
Measurement
confusion of name: index is not a measure of happiness but rather a measure of environmental efficiency of supporting well-being in a given country.
'happiness' or 'life satisfaction' are very subjective and personal: cultural influences and complex impact of policies on happiness.
limitations
The HPI does not factor in GDP, income levels, or employment rates, which are critical for understanding a country's overall prosperity.
HPI averages well-being at a national level but does not reflect disparities within a country, such as wealth gaps or social inequality.
Strengths
Holistic
Combines well-being, life expectancy, inequality, and ecological footprint to assess sustainable well-being.
Reduces reliance on economic standards by challenging economic growth metrics – Offers an alternative to GDP by measuring happiness and sustainability together.
Environmental
Sustainability Focus – Prioritizes environmental impact alongside human well-being, unlike GDP.
Encourages Sustainable Policies – Highlights countries that achieve high well-being with low ecological impact.
Promotes Environmental Awareness – Encourages nations to adopt policies that balance well-being with ecological responsibility.
