a posteriori and a piori arguments
rely on evidence to everyone
starts from what is known
gives empirical basis for belief in God
purpose observed from nature indicates a desiner
even if we cannot understand the purpose of everything
purpose is still evident
why is there something rather than nothing
needs to be a reason or explanation for this
explanation for our existance
requires a different sort of being
a necessary being e.g., Aquinas 3rd way
discussions about existence need synthetic evidence found in observations and use of the senses
we cannot rely on words or logic alone
to define a infinte being
A piori arguments use deductive reasoning
the premises lead to a logical and certain conclusion
god is beyond this world and cannot be observed
therefore, better to rely on reason
those who don't believe still have an idea of God
they would agree that God is the greatest possible being
since it is greater to exist in mind and reality than mind alone
and God is the greatest being, he must exist
existence is part of the essence of God
a perfect being just like a triangle essense
existence cannot be seperated from God
therefore God is logically neccessary
there is no need to look for external evidence using unreliable sense experience
this can lead to multiple conclusions
the world can be explained by chance
natural selection or God
A priori arguments avoid this issue
