TYPES OF COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY
MENTAL HEALTH MODEL
What does it achieve:
improved mental health focusing on prevention, empowerment, and community support systems
Example:
a community-based program offering support groups and resources to help people cope with their stress and mental health challenges in their local neighbourhood
Aim:
improves mental health of people living in a clearly defined area
ECOLOGICAL MODEL
What does it achieve:
the model achieves this by applying Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as the theory analyses in detail the interdependence between the individual (micro-level) and their community (meso-level)
Example:
the interaction between a parent and their child’s school
Aim:
focuses on the interaction and interdependence in dynamic community changes that affects individuals, groups and societies.
ORGANISATIONAL MODEL
What does it achieve:
improved teamwork, more effective organizational structures, and better adaptability to change institutions like schools, universities, and businesses
Example:
a university restructuring its departments into interdisciplinary teams, allowing faculty's from different fields to collaborate on research and curriculum development, improving innovation and efficacy
Aim:
enhance team building and facillitate structural change within institutions by focusing on their structures, processes, and relationships, particulary in urban settings
SOCIAL ACTION MODEL
These approach's were specifically designed to address and dismantle the oppressive structures left behind by the apartheid system
By fostering change at a systematic level, the model sought to create more equitable social conditions
Aim:
empower disempowered communities by incorporating both traditional and preventative strategies
PHENOMENOLOGICAL MODEL
How does it achieve this
: by studying Bronfenbrenner's theory, societal or cultural change (macro-level) cannot occur of the micro, meso, and exosystems do not adopt this change
Example
: stopping gang violence begins with individuals making the choice to not belong to one
Aim:
focus on improving relationships in families, groups
and communities
