Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction, first appearing around the early 1980s and named after a short story written by Bruce Bethke, made by combining the words "cybernetic" and "punk rock". Cyberpunk follows a lot of rules in order to be considered cyberpunk, for example, it has to be set in the near future where technology is advanced and set within a dystopia, often, with a few or singular corporation in control of society and the advanced technology, only using the technology in ways that only benefit them. Often, cybernetic prosthetics and advanced information technology are included in cyberpunk and the themes commonly include nihilism and late stage capitalism.
