Pierrot Lunaire 1967
Physical setting
simplistic set - black backdrop with a tower of scaffolding in the centre.
the costume and makeup is is the style of the Commedia Dell'arte - white makeup very dramatic
bright white light - symbolise cold moonlight
the white costumes represent innocence and youthfulness which is what Pierrot Lunaire wants to be. he wears a child's sailor hat which shows his longing to be young again
dancers
3 dancers, 2 male 1 female. the main focus is on Pierrot Lunaire
all the dancers have set rolls and characterisation
aural setting
is is pitched speech - a German language poem about Pierrot Lunaire. This language is not as accessible to an English audience and so its shows how the lyrics are not important.
the music is discordant which makes the audience feel uncomfortable as it relates to Pierrot Lunaire's feelings as he is uncomfortable in the reel world and wants to escape to the stars.
movement components
the more classical movements are closer to the top of the tower as he is happier and more comfortable up there closer to the sky whereas on the ground he is more frantic and uncomfortable which is portrayed through the abstract movement

It is based around the slow and low impact martial art form 'Tai Chi'. it is used as a form of meditation and also a form of self defence

the costumes are orange tie dyed catsuit/unitard
empty stage with only side lighting to make it atmospheric and mysterious

they use some moves from 'Tai Chi' specifically 'Embrace Tiger' and 'Return to Mountain'
they use deep turned out plie plies and slow flowing lines
they perform some contact work where a dancer walkes across the other dancers which symbolises walking across the suspension bridge of life which is a reference to Chinese culture
there is ballet, contemporary, Tai Chi.

info - it was Glen Tetley's last piece for Rambert. it is a full length feature piece. it is based on William Shakespeare's tragedy 'The Tempest' however didn't always follow the plot. Bruce played the lead role.
