Data Protection Act 1998
The storage and processing of personal data
must
be
:
Fair and lawful
Relevant and not excessive
Accurate and up to date
Only kept as long as needed
Only be used for the stated purpose
Be kept securely
Handled in line people's rights
Not be transferred to countries without protection laws
Personal data refers to living real people
Exceptions are - national security, crime and taxation, domestic purposes (e.g. address book)
The
Computer Misuse Act 1990
This makes hacking a crime
Covers:
Unauthorised access to computer material
Unauthorised access with intent to commit or facilitate crime
Unauthorised modification of computer material
Making, supplying or obtaining anything which can be used in computer misuse offences
Examples:
Spreading a virus
Attempting to log in without authorisation
Using someone else's login
Reading, changing or deleting data
