Buffets are contributing a significant amount to food waste
What do you know about the problem?
I know that all you can eat buffets contribute a lot to food waste. Through customers not finishing their meals, and throwing out food because it's not fresh.
What do you need to learn about the problem?
What are the possible solutions that businesses can take to reduce their food waste? What are some of the things that businesses have done to reduce food waste?
Why is it a problem?
Food in landfills can cause a ton of issues for the environment.
There are people who are starving, and we are just throwing away food.
Who is impacted by the problem?
Everything on earth that needs air
What solutions have been proposed before (if any)?
Why haven't they worked to solve the problem?
I feel like part of the reason they didn't work was because they didn't reinforce what they said. Also, sign wasn't prominent enough and I don't think customers care
I have seen signs around the restaurants that are meant to stop customers from wasting food. They say something upon the words "Please take what you can eat" or "Wasting a significant amount of food can cause a charge" but there is no action to reenforce these threats as they may drive customer away.
What are possible solutions you could propose?
Participating in an app called Too Good To Go
Donating leftover food
Start pricing by pound instead of an all you can eat style
Take home leftovers for small fee
Partner up with famers and give them food scraps to make compost
Participating in an app called Too Good To Go
Too Good To Go is an app for business to sell their leftover food at a fraction of the price to people who wants to save the food from landfills.
The owners of these businesses
There is a threshold for the amount of restaurant to be in a certain area in order to be on Too Good To Go.
Donating leftover food
Leftover food at the end of the day can be offered to certain organizations that are willing to take them
Business owners and non-profit organizations
They would need to contact a non-profit organization and ask if they would want to take in the food and offer it to some people that may want it. There would be people who packs up this leftover food on the stations and drive it to the organization or someone from the organization come pick it up
Start pricing by pound instead of an all you can eat style
When people are charge by the weight of the food, they choose more wisely on what they want to try as everything on their plate can cost them money. So therefore, there would be less waste.
Business owners and customers
The business would have to change how they operate
Take home leftovers for small fee
If people want to, they can take their leftovers from their plates home for a small fee to reduce food waste.
Business owners and customers
The business would have this option available and advertise it
Partner up with famers and give them food scraps to make compost
Buffets and restaurant are known to have cut fruit and vegetables that can be donated to farmers or used for compost
Business owners and farmers or possible people that make compost?
