5.02 THE COURSE OF THE WAR
1 CASUS BELLI AND CHAIN REACTION
What is casus belli?
The specific reason why a conflict begins
In this case started because of
The assassination of the crown prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
On 28 June of 1914
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo
by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian separatist
In response, Austria-Hungary threatened to annex Serbia
But Russia came into defence of Serbia
Immediately, there was a reaction from all the alliances
The Great War begun
2 FIRST PHASE (1914)
The first phase was called war of movement,
Germany launched a rapid attack against France
Through Belgium with the intention of dominating it quickly
Simultaneosly, a combined action by Germans and Austro-Hungarians
Repelled early Russian advances
Over these months, the powers were still confident of a quick victory
But, these factors soon vanished as the war fronts stabilised.
3 SECOND PHASE (1915–1916)
In 1915, the Triple Entente troops held back the Germans on the Western front
A new phase began, that was named trench warfare or war of position,
Both armies couldn't advance, so the war came to a standstill
They were terrible losses of human life on both armies
The battle of Verdun
It lasted nearly 10 mhonts
700,000 casualties
One of the bloodiest battles of the Great War
To protect themselves from the enemy
Soldiers had to dig complex systems of trenches.
Rain, cold, snow, mud, rats, lice and illnesses
Pushed human suffering to the extreme.
The harsh conditions of this trench war
Led to riots and mass desertion
4 THIRD PHASE (1917–1918)
The last phase of the war began in 1917
The triumph of the Russian Revolution meant that was out of the game
In May 1915
The ship Lusitania was attacked by a German submarine
This caused many people to be in favour of the United States entering World War I
Allied counterattacks and the progressive loss of support from Germany
Led the Germans to conclude that the war couldn't be won
The Weimar Republic was proclaimed
Near the end of the conflict, Wilson (the president of USA) proposed a peace plan
Known as Wilson's Fourteen Points
