Nature and Role of SC
Appointment Process
The president makes a nomination when a space becomes free, then the senate either accepts or declines the appointment.

Disadvantages
-
-
The Senate vote is now, often, entirely along party lines.
The party in favour of the nominee will often question the nominee less thoroughly in the Judiciary Committee hearings.
The length of the nomination process means that, for a time, there are 8 justices which can lead to a tied court.
The role of the media and pressure groups have further politicised the process creating a media circus.
