In order to promote racial healing, Whites must acknowledge White skin privilege.
Most white people don't think of themselves in racial terms.
Being in charge or the majority leads to race "obliviousness". Whites see themselves as the norm.
Most Whites don't see a problematic background in regard to their own race.
This has negative consequences.
"Blind Spots"
Race and ethnicity are not the same thing.
Ethnicity
Ethnicity determines and revolves around culture
Food, language, religion, music, family
Race
Determines social position (only exists in relation to others)
For most Black people race and ethnicity are intertwined.
Black culture was lost through slavery.
New African-American culture arose out of collected elements in the US.
One thing to recognize that one has White skin privilege
Part of the problem is that not all privileges are created equal
Hierarchy
That is fine, so long as we are honest about what is happening.
Only then will we be in a position to search for a middle way, but advance is only possible if White skin privilege is acknowledged.
