      - Never being asked to represent your whole race in a discussion
      - Never having to ask whether a bad day was caused by race.
      - It is much easier for white people to understand how other's lives are shaped by disadvantage than to understand how privilege shapes their own.
        
        When Dalton and Jill wanted to use a canoe, Jill wanted to go through their neighbor's backyard to get to the river, and was confident she would be welcome. Dalton was afraid of being seen as a "perpetrator," because he was black. Jill understood how he was afraid of this, but didn't realize how her feeling of welcome was because she was white.
