what is the symbolism of the shell
used to call others, meeting "theyll come when they hear us"
"booming"- auditory imagery
"where is the man with the trumpet" -> the booming note of the shell makes jack think that there's a "man with the megaphone"
makes Ralph seem more authoratative
the trumpet confirms the power (intangible, so symbolic)
becomes significant
how is island represented?
visual imagery and diction-> how is the shell described? what impression, what it symbolises
"deep cream, touched with a fading pink"
beautiful
"eighteen inches of shell"
very specific, ordered, structured, much like the democracy
"delicate, embossed, pattern"
fragility, beauty, contrast with the boys, representing the right to speak. Imbues certain qualities with the right to speak- perhaps not fully understood by boys
juxtaposition of ralph and piggy
beginnings of hierachy are forming
ralph is blowing while piggy is the one doing the work
key characters
ralph
the one who takes the ideas, makes them his own, contrasted with piggy; do-er, not thinker
immature (reaction to shell)
"squirting noise" -> short, inconsistent breaths into the conch
makes funny sounds-> finds it funny -> later to become leader
they are boys, stupid, do dumb things, they are children for goodness sake (theme of innocene)-> to be linked to the end of the book
innocence: shows interest in the jagged end of a trunk (how it was destroyed by the crash)
gives more of a casual demeanor - he doesn't ask for names until piggy offers the question, and doesn't proffer acquaintance
more agile, fit than piggy
pride (better piggy than fatty) realises he is wrong but does not avoid it. however, while he doesn't want to admit his mistake, he tries to placate piggy by offering a half hearted apology to him and softening the blow
emotional shit makes him more uncomfortable. not mature enough to deal with feelings and tries to brush tthem off
piggy
the one with more knowledge, coming up with ideas; thinker, not a do-er
immature (reaction to shell)
follower
trusting? naive? unsuspecting? compared to ralph
"We was attacked" suggest he is less educated due to the differences in language, also diff due to the ass-mar and size
"im the only one in school with assmar" - gives us sympathy as it shows us how despo for attetion he is
no mama no papa tragic background, keeps talking about his aunty , refers largely to adults like the pilot and parents-
did you hear about the atom bomb? "unsual porblem" true impact of the situation. maybe not that smmart with social cues, hes street smart and prudent
:theyre all dead, no one knows we are here, we will stay here till we die - good critical thinking , wakes ralph up "ralp people are dead get ur ass ot and do shit"
lack of social awareness gives him lack of charisma, so he cannot be a leader here, less appealing due to his bluntness
jack
little kids
"taking their cue from johnny" / "gave them simple obediennce they gave to the men in the megaphone -> the obedience is iculcated into them from young -if their loud, listen (social order being built). always trained to listen to those of higher authority)- quite mindless
"gorging" - overeating (self-indulgent-> eat sleep play)- very simple life, physical impulses (fufilling basic needs -simple)
little kids give little thought- just sit and wait for people to do smth
descirbed some to be nude, some wearing school uniforms
used to list different identities
school uniform meant to be orderly, but some pieces of clothing are removed, not proper dressing
title of chapter
why is it called "the sound of the shell"?
it is the shell that symbolises the leadership, because it was one of the main reason that ralph was elected over jack
jack vs ralph
it is the sound of the shell that unites the boys together (into a group, call them all into one place). could be symbolic
with one of the most tensions
