Domestic Economic Issues
The Treaty of Versailles led to economic instability & resentment and war debt & loss of workers → Industrial decline
Ruhr Crisis: France & Belgium occupied Ruhr due to unpaid reparations causing significant resource loss
The Great Depression: US loans stabilized economy but made Germany financially dependent and the Great Depression made German economy collapsed
consequently
War seen as necessary to fuel industry & secure resources. Hitler believed that German expansion was necessary ignoring the peace agreements (Lebensraum)
Nazi-Soviet Pact
Germany did it to avoid a Two-Front War and to enable the invasion of Poland. The pact was signed to avoid conflict between the countries
A consequence of this was that Germany invaded Poland (Sept 1, 1939) and Germany and France declared war (WW2). The Soviet Union invaded Eastern Poland, ending up dividing it.
Russia did it to regain lost territory and Stalin’s military was weakened due to the Great Purge of 1937, and he needed time to rebuild it.
