ATTATCHMENT
Van ijzendorn
did a meta analysis into cultural variations in attatchment
looked at 32 studies that had all used the strange situation - taken place across 8 countries (UK, US, JAPAN, CHINA, GERMANY, ISRAEL, NETHERLANDS, SWEDEN)
found most common attachment was secure
Germany had high levels of avoidant children
Japan and China had high levels of resistant children
supports the idea that attachment types vary across cultures may be due to parenting structures
AO3
high population validity - nice range of cultures
meta analysis is using pre existing research so they have no control over how the study has been carried out - may have had extraneous variables
some of the countries were more representative for samples than others, not equal averge
ROMANIAN CHILDREN STUDY
under dictatorship - got rid of contraception
had low birth rates - economy was SO BAD - government couldnt pay for all the children like they said they would
poorer people had to give up children, went to an orphanage - orphanage was funded by the government so therefore no money was put in
orphanage was based on volunteers - UN eventually stepped in when dictatorship was overthrown, meaning other countries took the children in
RUTTER
studied the romanian children that had been adopted
did an assessment on the children when they came over - little spoke, malnourished, undeveloped in all areas
then studied them again at 4,6,8,12 and 15
the children who had been adopted by the age of 6 months by the age of 6 they were fully recovered
groups that were adopted after the 6 months and depending on how long they spent in the orphanage they were found to have more damage (low IQ, poor social skills, low attention span, etc)
found to have formed disorganised attachments with their parents - this is when they have no stranger anxiety, become very clingy and attention seeking
CONCLUDE - insinuations have a negative long lasting effect therefore no child should stay for longer than 6 months
A03
practical application , encouraged foster care systems to help them incorporate into a family
not all institutions will have this affect, might be the state of the institution
extraneous variables - children who are adopted slightly later in their life will be ytreated differently, they also may have gained a language barrier - added to lower IQ
parents may treat their baby differently without realising
BOWLBYS MATERNAL DEPRIVATION
Occurs when a child is deprived of the mothers attention, any level of separation can have negative long term effects on the child
5 effects
Cognitive impairment - they will have lower than average IQ, lack of attention, bad memory etc
hostile view of the world
inability to form attatchments later In life because there internal working model hasn't developed properly
lack of empathy for others
deliquancy/ criminal behaviour
these effects are irreversible if the child doesnt form an attatchment by the age of 2
A03
determinitic
44 thieves, interviewed them and found that the majority of them had been maternally deprived - most severe deprivation were diagnosed with affection less psychopaths
socially sensitive because its suggesting children who dont have primary caregivers are a 'lost cause' knock on effect with children in foster care
