In 1928, American folklorist Stith Thompson, known for his work in classifying folktales, translated and expanded Aarne's story classification system. In 1961, he revised it again, creating the AT number system. According to D.L Ashliman, this system organizes about 2,500 basic story plots that have been used by European and Near Eastern storytellers for many years.
