Revolts and rebellions in England
Summer 1067
Eustance of Boulogne (Norman)
Personal desire for power, invades Kent but defeated by the Norman garrison there
NOT do with Saxons unhappy with Will, just a power hungry norman
Early 1068
First Saxon rebellion
Although led by Gytha, Harold Godwinsons mum, so not general population
Will returns to England and marches to Exeter with Norman AND English troops
English actually on Will's side, going to fight for him
Summer 1068
North- Edgar, Edwin and Morcar South- HG's sons
Complete fiasco, lack of co-ordination
English forces win at Somerset FOR Will, castle built in York
Summer 1069- Xmas
'The conquest hung in the balance' - many Normans returned home viewing England not worth the risk
Edgar and the Danes invade England, 240 ships full of trained warriors
Will responds by burning York, spending Xmas there wearing his crown in the ruins
Seize York in September, Yorkshire in rebellion with them
Danes bought off
Harrying of the North Jan-Feb 1070
Yorkshire, Chester and Staffordshire all pillaged, burnt and massacred
1/3 of Yorkshire classed as waste in the 1085 Doomsday book
Hardly any rebellions in England after the harrying, although it made being a legitamite ruler of England (as initially intended) very hard
Hereward the Wake 1071
Danes were easily bought off
Blockaded the Island of Ely (base of operations)
Cult rebellion leader
Regarded as a desperate last stand for English rebellion
Revolt of the Earls 1075
Will stays in Normandy
Group of 3 Earls, wanted to take control of England and divide between the 3
AB Lanfranc sorts the ordeal out via letters of negotiation
Relying on support from the Danes, however it never came (due to Will previously buying off?) and they failed to gain local support (shows how Will's previous quelling of rebellions worked)
