Extraction of Caffeine from Tea
+7g sodium carbonate and 50mL H2O to 250mL beaker
4 tea bags
Boil gently for 20 mins
Tea bags should be at the bottom of the beaker with water solution nearly covering it
Use a test tube
Cool solution in ice bath
Decant into 250mL separatory funnel
Press tea bags with test tube for residual liquid
+10mL H2O into tea bags
Press tea bags again
Wash black aqueous solution 7x with 6mL ethyl acetate
Collect organic layer after each wash
Dry over sodium sulfate

Thin Layer Chromatography Analysis of Caffeine
Dissolve caffeine in 1mL ethyl acetate
Spot samples uniformly on TLC plate
1cm from bottom edge of TLC plate spot standard solution of caffeine
Once dry, using 20:10:3:0.2 benzene/ether/acetic acid/methanol mixture develop the plate
Visualize spots using a UV lamp
