Food
In Athens, Banquets were popular
Olives were plentiful in Greece
Because of its many coasts, they eat a lot of seafood, including Marcel and squid. (rich and poor)
Only poor people ate out in public, whereas rich people ate in their homes.
The Banquets were called symposia, and they were only for wealthy and missile class men.
The Greeks grew wheat and barley to make bread and porridge, which was important for their diet.
Onions,peas,garlic,lentils, and cabbage were eaten a lot.
Only rich people ate meat, and usually sacrificial animals. for the rest of the time it was fish and cheese.
Fruit such as polmagranates,figs,apples,and pears were available.
Clothing
Greek cloths were made largely of finely spun wool
Lighter, linen clothes made of flax seeds were worn as well
wealthy people wore expensive silks imported from the east, and in Hellenistic times, mulberry trees were planted to start a silk indistruy
Bright colors were popular in ancient Greece, especially for women. Purple was from sea snails, and violet was insect larva. All others came from plants.
Clothing for both genders was made up of two main garments.A chiton, Which is one rectangle of cloth cut in two and attached at the neck and elbows, and a cloak, called a himation.
Workmen wore a very short Chiton to give them greater freedom of movement.
younger men wore only a himation, attached around their waist. women and men wore sunhats outside, and children wore shorter clothes.
Jobs
agraculture in ancient greece was the main source of income. it was also the most common occupation, growing olives, grapes, and grains.
Artizans produced pottery, metalwork, and textiles.
Artisans traded with other cultures.
Pottery was the most significant art form
Metalworking made weapons for the soldiers.
merchents were sorted into trade groups and sent off to trade and sell to other places
Slavery was a major part of the greek economy, and were owned by wealthy individuals, not considered citizens with rights.
soldiers fought for ancient Greece, and were known for strategy and tactics.
Social structure
The Greeks had a few distinct social classes that the population fit into.
There were three overarching classes.
Middle: the middle was referred to as the yeomary, and they consisted of small farmers or merchants. they were free citizens and well respected, and had enough financial security.
Lower: The lower class were not usually citizens, and had very little money. these were the poor, slaves, and laborers.
Lower class citizens were usually the very poor, and didn't have citizenship. These were slaves and hard laborers.
Upper: Usually high officials or patrons in the arts, such as poets or painters. They were usually born into privilege or power, and aka the aristacrasy.
Upper and middle class were considered citizens. the upper class had power and money, and were referred to as such, but the middle class were referred to as metics. the metics were free but had less money, ussually middle class.
Housing
The Greeks liked private homes.
Greek basic farmhouse was made of sun-dried mud bricks, which were not very strong, and things tended to crumble.
Richer people lived in townhouses, which were more luxurious and had more rooms. the garden and courtyard were in the middle of the house.
There was a well in the garden where slave girls did the family laundry
Roofs were made of clay tiles, and walls were sometimes plastered over.
A statue of the god Hermes sat at every entrance to keep evil spirits away from the house.
Houses had a quarters for men and one for women.
On the tiled roofing of some of the richer houses, there was carved human faces.
Entertainment
Rich people had time to visit the gymnasium, throw dinner parties, and play all kinds of games.
music was sang at births, weddings, and funerals. music was very important, they had string instruments: lyre, harp, kithara, Wind instruments: syrinx, pan pipes.
The Greeks had tops for small children.
the Greeks had a board game similar to chutes and ladders.
the Greeks believed in the value of training for war, through sports. The Olympic games were a way of honoring Zeus of Olympia.
Athletes were treated with reverence, and wars were suspended to let people travel to the games. the games were a major inspiration for artists. the Olympic games are happening right now.
there were games every 4 years in Athens and many beautiful statiums across the Greek continent, and into Roman times.
Written language
The alphabet is 300,000 years old
The launguage is still used today
Phoenician syllabary was a constants only alphabet that was first developed.
The Greeks adapted the launguage of the semitic people and adapted it to add vowels.
The Greeks wrote on paper made from the stalks of papyrus.
Some of the most celebrated poets and playwrites were From ancient Greece.
All Greek mythology is writen as an epic poem.
Education
Boys went to school at 7 years old
Boys were educated in reading, writing, and arithmetic by a teacher called a Grammatistes
Boys were educated in music by a teacher called a kitharistes and had to memorize poetry and learn about debating.
Girls did not go to school, but wealthy ones could afford a private tutor who taught them reading and writing while their mother taught them to sew and run a home.
Older boys were educated by a traveling teacher called a Sophites.
