What is reflexivity?
The researcher cannot separate themselves or the context of the research from the data gathered; no data is fully objective with strings attached (Qu and Dumay, 2011) - not neutral
- How does who I am, who I have been, who I think I am and how I feel affect data collection and analysis (Pillow, 2003) - interpersonal situation in interviews
A central methodological tool for qualitative researchers, contributing to quality
- Finlay (2002) argues reflexive analysis should ideally start from the beginning of the research process
- Challenged the fundamental and conventional ideas of science, which favour professional objectivity and distance over engagement and subjectivity (Finlay and Gough, 2002)
- Reflexivity is analysing the self recursively and critically in relation to the object, context and process of inquiry
Recursive - relating to or involving the repeated application of a rule, definition or procedure to successive results
- Reflective writing - critical reflection -
-> Stand back from event with deep thinking
-> Self-questioning, considers other's perspectives and motives
-> Comments on learning and development
-> More than just reflection; reflexivity is trying to look at one's reflection and understand it, not just observe it
Reflecting on positionality -
- In qualitative research, the researcher's role is not seen as neutral
- Actions, appearances, gender, age, race, sexuality, social identity, beliefs, previous experiences, prior knowledge etc can all impact respondents and in turn, on the actual nature of the data collected
- involves understanding the impact of one's theoretical background, social class, research affiliation, political experiences, religion etc and how this impacts research
