She's trying to bring Scout down by telling her she will amount to nothing
This shows that Mrs Dubose thinks her way is always right and that scout has to change her ways
She thinks Scout is a disgrace to maycomb and that she should be waiting on coloured people at the O.K Cafe

Jem has to look past it and keep calm and collected and just let her rant because she is ill
Atticus explains that you can't control what she says but you can control how you act
