Conformity is the jailer of freedom and enemy of youth.
people conform to the rules of society
They might conform to others for the fear of being judged
They conform in order to fit in with the rest of the group.
Conformity causes people to avoid self expression in fear of being ridiculed.
People conform to their own beliefs as they do not want to be challenged
People tend to rely on misinformation in order to appeal to their own agendas and beliefs
Conformity bias might occur as someone might agree with a group just to fit in.
E.g people had to conform to the rules of covid 19 in order to survive.
Internalisation
People accept influence in order to improve their private and personal lives
Jenness (1932) was the first psychologist to study conformity. His experiment was an ambiguous situation involving a glass bottle filled with beans.
He asked participants individually to estimate how many beans the bottle contained. Jenness then put the group in a room with the bottle and asked them to provide a group estimate through discussion.
Participants were then asked to estimate the number on their own again to find whether their initial estimates had altered based on the influence of the majority.
Groupthink:
A team making a decision based on the majority opinion, even if individuals have reservations.
Fashion trends:
People adopting a popular hairstyle or clothing style even if it doesn't suit them personally.
Social media behavior:
Sharing a post or opinion because you see a lot of your friends sharing it, even if you don't fully agree.
