Cells
NUCLEUS
-
Nuclear envelope
Encloses nucleus, separate from cytoplasm
-
Pore structures
At the lip of pore, inner and outer memb of envelope is continuous
-
Except at pores, nuclear side of env is lined by nuclear lamina
A net-like array of protein filaments called intermediate filaments —> mechanical support of env to maintain shape of nucleus
-

-
Endomembrane system
Endoplasmic reticulum
SMOOTH ER
Has impt enz that help lipid synthesis (oils, steroids, new memb p.lipids

GOLGI BODY
After leaving ER, many tpt vesicles travel to Golgi for ER pdts to be MSP
-
Before pdts from golgi bud off in tpt vesicles from trans face, golgi stack sorts the pdts and targets them for various parts of the cell
-
Tpt vesicles may also have external molecles in their memb that recognise “docking sites” on surf of organelles/on plasma memb —> targets vesicles appropriately
Consists of a group of associated, flattened membranous sacs called cisternae (1 cell may have up to 100 stacks of cisternae)
-
Golgi stack has distinct structural directionality; memb of cisternae on opposite sides of stack differ in thickness and molecular composition

Lysosomes
-
-
-
People with inherited lysosomal disease have cells that lack a functioning hydrolytic enz —> lysosomes become engorged with indigestible material which begins to interfere with other cellular activities
