Group Dynamics
Types of Groups: Formal and Informal
Informal Work Groups
: People associated outside the formal organization (e.g., colleagues playing tennis together).
Formal Work Groups
: Groups formed by managers, subordinates, or both, with clear roles and responsibilities affecting behavior.
Stages of Group Development (Tuckman Model)
Forming:
Short phase with anxiety, politeness, and task clarification
Storming
Increased authenticity, exploring new power dynamics, tension and conflict
Norming
Acceptance of differences, leading to cooperation, ground rules established, ideal time for team building
Performing
Respectful, group becomes competent, leaders take on coaching roles
Adjourning
End of group, debrief and celebration
Punctuated Equilibrium Model
Groups progress in a dynamic, cyclical manner
Disruptions (e.g., external changes or crises) can lead groups back to the storming phase before resuming the performing stage.
Groups experience periods of stability with incremental changes, followed by revolutionary changes triggered by crises.
Cohesion
Degree of camaraderie and unity within a group. Cohesive groups are more productive, and members experience greater satisfaction and connection.
