The Immune System By; Daisy Hernandez
MAJOR FUNCS OF IMMUNE AND LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM: Returns fluids leaked from blood vessels back to blood.
IMMUNE SYSTEM:Provides resistance to diseases.
LOC OF LYMPHATIC ORGANS AND THEIR FUNCS
PRIMARY LYMPHOID ORGANS: T & B cells mature-RBM & thymus
SECONDARY LYMPHOID ORGANS: Mature lymphocytes encounter their antigen and activated
PURPOSE & EX OF 1ST, 2ND, & 3RD LINE OF DEFENSE
1ST: external body membranes (skin & mucosae), its mostly skin & mucous
2ND: antimicrobial proteins, phagocytes, & other cells. They recognize & bind tightly to structures on microbes
3RD: Attacks foreign substances, releases & recognizes same defense molecules, and INNATE responses release proteins to alert cells of adaptive system
INNATE( NATURAL) IMMUNE DEFENSES & ADAPTIVE (ACQUIRED) IMMUNE DEFENSES
INNATE DEFENSES
Surface barriers: Skin, Mucous. Infernal Defenses: phagocytes, natural killer cells, inflammation, fever
ADAPTIVE DEFENSES
Humoral Immunity B cells, Cellular Immunity T cells
HUMORAL & CELLULAR RESPONSE
HUMORAL: B cells
CELLULAR: T cells
ANTIGENS & ANTIBODIES
ANTIGENS
Substances that moblize adaptive defense and provoke immure responses
CHARACTERISTICS: can be compare or activity --have ANTIGENS determinants
-can be a self-antigen
ANTIGENS PRESENTING CELLS: Dendrite Cells, Macrohages, Blymphocytes.
ANTIBODIES (Immunoglobulins): proteins secreted by plasma cells
CLASSES: IgM (pentaner), IgA (Diner), IgD (monoer), IgG (monomer)
ARTIFICIAL VS NATURALLY ACQUIRED IMMUNITY
ACTIVE
NATURALLY ACQUIRED: Infection, contact with pathogen
ARTICIALLY AQUIRED: Vaccine, dead, or attenuated pathogens
PASSIVE:
NATURALLY ACQUIRED: Antibodies passed from mother-fietus or infant in her milk
ARTICIALLY ACQUIRED: Injection of exogenous antibodies
PASSIVE VS ACTIVE IMMUNITY
NATURALLY ACQUIRED: Infection, contact with pathogen ARTICIALLY AQUIRED: Vaccine, dead, or attenuated pathogens
NATURALLY ACQUIRED: Antibodies passed from mother-fietus or infant in her milk ARTICIALLY ACQUIRED: Injection of exogenous antibodies
CELLS INVOLVED IN IMMUNE SYSTEM & FUNCS
T cells provide defense against intracellular antigens and some T cells kill cells and oters release chemicals
CD4 Cells go into helper T cells (TH) and activated B cells, other T adaptive immune.
Can be memory T cells, cd8 cells go to cytotoxic T cells (Tc) and destroy cells.
Helper T cells & Cytotoxic and reg are activated T cells
DISORDERS ASSOCIATED W/ IMMUNE SYSTEM
SEVERE COMBINED IMMUNODEFIENCY SYNDROME (SCID)
genetic defect with marked deficit in B & T cells
HODGEN'S DISEASE
Cancer in Bcell, depresses lymph node cells and leads to immunodeficiency.
ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cripples immune system by activating helper T cells
AUTOIMMUNITY
Production of auto antibodies and sensitized T2 cells which destroy body tissue.
SYSTEMIC RES
Anaphylactic shock
