Industrial Sytems
Assembly
Industries involve putting together parts made elsewhere. Parts are added to other semi-finished parts in a sequence that usually involves conveyer belts, assembly lines and workers using specialised skills at each stage. Every extra stage added leads to the final assembled product.
Processing
Involves taking materials and creating a finished product from combining and changing them in some way. It is common in the food industry, where recipes produce a final unique product from many sources, e.g. canned food.
Hi-tech
Products are manufactured using ‘cutting edge’ technology and involve advanced computer techniques. Biotechnology, telecommunications, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, IT developments are all in this category. However, the pace of change can mean that a hi-tech industry may not be so hi-tech in a short space of time.
Manufacturing
Refers to the conversion of raw materials from the primary sector into finished products on a large scale. Steelmaking produces many manufactured products, some of which are then used in processing industries, assembly lines and hi-tech industries.
Karachi
energy
Karachi nuclear power, koranga thermal plant makes 15%, pipri thermal plant makes 21%, Karachi has highest electricity generating in the country
raw materials
Iron ore, manganese and most of the coking coal can be imported through Port Qasim. Limestone, needed as a flux, can be brought by road from the nearby Makli Hills near Thatta. Large quantities of water required for making steel can be brought from Lake Haleji, 50 km to the east
