Media - haven't actually been there but experienced through media e.g. books, TV, films, social media

Experienced - places people spend time in, live there or regularly visit

Locale - the effect that people have on a setting, shaped by people, cultures customs
Sense of place - the subjective and emotional attachment to place through lived experience (Doreen Massey)

Insiders - born/ live there, familiar with the place, shared cultural values, conforms to social norms
Outsiders - don't live there, feel unwelcome, don't have a sense of belonging or shared values
Gentrification - process of renovation and improvement if housing to suit a middle class audience. This can make insiders feel like outsiders due to changes in place character
Endogenous - internal factors which shape a places character:
- land use
- topography
- physical geography
- built environment
- location
- demographics and economic characteristics
Exogenous - external factors which shape a place:
- flows of people
- flows of money and investment
- flows of resources
- flows of ideas
