Factors that can impact EAL children and young people - Madison may

older children are faster to pick up a new language because their cognitive skills are more advanced, allowing them to remember new words and also analyse how languages are working

babies- Because of their age they are mostly absorbing language. Although if a child hears multiple language they may struggle with associating words.
pre- school- they will start to say few words alone in multiple different languages but may find it difficult to link the words. Although some children may be able to understand
primary school- when starting school they may struggle with their knowledge of the languages and may mix them together. as well as grammer
secondary school- because of their age and development stage you will find they do not make as much grammer or mix them together as of the age and development stage
post-16 - may still need support depending on their development stage but will not switch the language as much
personality
sociable and curious CYP are more motivated to communicate and are less fearful about making mistakes and allows them to progress faster
cognition
learing a new language requires memory and information processing. CYP who have this quickly have an advantage
SEND
CYP who have a learning difficulty or disability that involves communication might need longer to learn a new language
bilingualism
CYP who have already mastered one language at home might be quicker to learn a new language
cultural background
whether the child's or young person family attitude towards education and learning English is positive is an important factor in how inclined they are to learn
learning enviroment
the resources, the attitudes of peers and teachers and use of English in the education setting can help a child or young person learn more
