SIMPLE DISTILLATION, Boiling Point Determination - Coggle Diagram
SIMPLE DISTILLATION
Get 15mL of unknown sol.
Note smell
Prepare distillation apparatus
Cover w/ aluminum foil the mouth of the receiving Erlenmeyer flask
Punch a whole in foil
1.5mL unknown solution to round bottom flask
Record volume
boiling chips
Clamp flask to still head
~20
drops record temp
1 more item...
Lower temp if solution is bubling
Make sure there are no cracks in glassware and leaks in rubber tubing
Tip of the thermometer should be at the middle opening of still head
Run water to check for leaks
Use rubber bands to hold glassware together
Boiling Point Determination
Throw residue from round bottom flask
In appropriate waste container
Wash round bottom flask
Triple-wash flask with small amt of forerun
Distill 2nd batch of distillate
If vol is too little
some forerun or the 3rd batch of distillate
Collect 1mL fractions w 10mL graduated cylinder
Record temp when reading remained constant
Compare with boiling pts of common chemicals in the lab
Consider smell, viscosity, solubility, etc.
