If women don't have diabetes already, they may not believe they are susceptible to GDM
Women may not know about the complications
May not believe GDM is a true threat to mom or baby
Lack of knowledge that GDM is one of the most common complications of pregnancy
Perceived barriers to healthy outcome of pregnancy
May not have easy access to healthy foods
Intimidating to have to start checking blood glucoses regularly
Percieved inability to maintain healthy weight
Being overwhelmed by all the "should"/"should not"'s of pregnancy, leading to lower self-efficacy
Fear of exercising "too hard" during pregancy
Perceived socio psychological & demographical barriers
Perceived safety of outside spaces where exercise is possible and free (may go under barriers to healthy outcome)
May have negative self perception after diagnosis, blocking them from self-efficacy
May perceive diagnosis makes them "unhealthy"
Low self esteem
May think that I have no resources and no positive outcome in my pregnancy due to low socioeconomic status
Social Support Concept
Informational

Provide recipes and new ways to exercise
Belonging
Emotional support by providing a listening ear
Counselling and support groups if needed
Tangible
Provide resources if transportation to frequent prenatal visits would be an issue
Provide resources for food stamps, food banks, food co-ops
Interpersonal Theory/Social Network Theory
Counseling and support groups may help women feel less alone in managing their condition
Social media groups/support groups can provide information about GDM, advanced maternal age and the potential complications
Support groups can help to educate the woman on why more frequent monitoring is needed during the pregnancy
A social group of women also oriented towards preventing/managing GDM may help a woman exercise more and eat better
A social network with members that are committed to losing weight and eating healthy will reinforce the idea that these things are important to maintaining health of mom and baby
Perceived benefits to healthy outcomes of pregnancy
Access to healthcare, prenatal care and wellness checkups throughout pregnancy provides better monitoring and better outcomes
Access to healthy food items and exercise decreases my chance of getting GDM
Making sure I have a healthy weight decreases my risk of GDM
