Viral infections can lead to different outcomes: Lytic infections cause cell lysis to release viral particles. Persistent infections include latent infections, where the virus remains dormant and can reactivate (e.g., herpes, varicella-zoster), and chronic infections, where the virus continuously produces viral particles (e.g., HIV). Viruses can also cause cancer, either directly by activating oncogenes or inactivating safety checks, or indirectly through chronic infection that leads to cellular changes.
