H Chem U8- Types of Reactions
Double Replacement
When the cations and anions of two compounds switch places.
AB+CD -> AD+BC
AgNO₃ + NaCl -> AgCl + NaNO₃
BeCl₂ + 2 AgNO₃ -> Be(No₃)₂ + 2 AgCl
Synthesis
Different atoms/molecules interact to form a different molecule/compound.
A+B-> AB
C + O₂-> CO₂
2 H₂ + O₂ -> 2 H₂O
Oxidation-Reduction
Oxidation- loss of electron(s) or an increase in the oxidation state.
Reduction- gain of electrons of decrease in oxidation state; occurs simultaneously as oxidation.
A + B -> A (loses an e-) B (gains an e-)
Mg + O₂ -> Mg(+2)O(-2)
Na + Cl -> Na(+1)Cl(-1)
Single Replacement
Chemical Reaction where one element replaces another in a compound.
A+BC->B+AC
Zn + 2 HCl->ZnCl₂ + H₂
2 Na + FeCl₂ -> Fe + 2 NaCl
Neutralization
Reaction where an acid and an equally strong base react, making each neutral. A type of double replacement reaction with two different compounds.
Acid + Base -> H₂O + Salt
HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H₂O
HBr + KOH -> KBr +H₂O
Decomposition
A reaction that breaks molecules into its smaller parts.
AB-> A+B
HgO -> 2Hg + O₂
2 MgO -> Mg + O₂
Precipitation
2 chemicals come together to form an insoluble solid and another aqueous (aq) solution.
AB+XY->AX+BY Form of DR
AgNo₃ (aq) + KCl (aq) -> AgCL (s) + KNo₃ (aq)
Co(NO₃)₂ (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) -> Co(OH)₂ (s) + 2 NaNO₃ (aq)
Combustion
A diatomic element and a hydrocarbon react to form H₂ and CO₂.
CxHy+O₂-> CO₂ + H₂O
CH₄ + 2 O₂-> CO₂ +H₂O
C₃H₈ + 5 O₂ -> CO₂ + 4 H₂O
