Sadiman : Village Saver from Drought
Farmer from Wonogiri Regency, Central Java and worked in Dali Hamlet, Geneng Subdistrict
The hill on the southeastern slope of Mount Lawu was severely deforested because of extensive logging activities and a series of forest fires
When Sadiman was tapping rubber from rubber trees on the hill to make ends meet, he found that many rubber trees no longer produced rubber latex.
-
After 19 years, Sadiman could not remember how many trees he had planted on the previously deforested hill
More residents have also supported Sadiman's efforts by for example providing free seedlings and joining him to plant them in the hills
Difficulities
He used to find the seedlings that he planted removed by the villagers who brought their cattle to the hill to eat grass
Many villagers used to understimate his efforts by saying that his actions were wasting time and useless
-
Profile
He was known as the one who has managed to turn his drought-prone village into a groundwater-rich region
He has been encouraging local residents to plant more trees in an attempt to curb a severe water crisis
Background
This extreme deforestation made the Gendol River, the only source of water for Geneng Villagers quickly dry up
-
Ideas & Efforts
He used of his own money to buy tree seedlings and single-handedly planted them on every part of the hill. Among the trees he grows are banyan and lamtoro
To keep his campaign alive, for the past several years he has been growing clove seedlings in front of his house and barters every 10 for 1 meter high banyan seedling
Result
Data from Geneng Subdistrict Office reported that at least 11.000 trees including 4000 banyan trees had been planted over this past 19 years
Achievment
Water flows from the foot of the hills through pipelines to fulfill the water and irrigation needs of at least 800 families living, not only in Geneng but the neighboring subdistrict too
