Christian Beliefs
The Creation story.
Christians believe that the world was created by God in seven days.
On each of the different days, God created something new.
He created light to make night and day and all the land, sky and oceans
He made humans, animals and all living things
On the seventh day, God had a rest day. Becuase of this, Christians believe that this day (Sunday) is a special day. It is a day of rest and when many Christians will attend church
Two problems with the Creation Story
God created light before he created the sun
And he took a week to make the earth, however it only took him just one day to create the whole universe
The Nature of God
God is Omnipotent - Meaning all powerful
God is Omniscient - Meaning all knowing
God is Omnibenevolent - Meaning all loving
Perfectly Just means that God is able to decide what is right and wrong.
Eternal means that God is everywhere at the same time and is forever lasting without end
The Trinity
The Father
This is God the creator. He made the earth and all life on it. He also looks after everyone and everything.
The Holy Spirit
Once Jesus left the Earth, the holy spirit send down to influence and guide all life on it.
The son
The Son is the term for Jesus who was both all God and all man.
An analogy representing the Trinity
It is sometimes thought of as being like H20.
For example the trinity is all the same thing. (The Father, the son, and the holy spirit). But just in different ways. Just like H20, there are different forms. E.g. Ice, steam and water. However no matter what it all still stays the same element. Just like the Trinty.
Salvation
Salvation through good deeds.
This is the idea that if you do enough good deeds you will go to heaven
Some people who may be in heaven because of this could be someone like Marcus Rashford for example
Salvation through Law
Some Christians believe that not breaking the laws in the bible will bring them to salvation
This includes things like not committing to adultery, not lying, not stealing and so on.
While these three roads to salvation appear to be contradictory they're all really saying the same thing - if you believe in Jesus you will be a 'good' person, and 'good' people get into heaven
Salvation through grace
'Grace' is the term Christians use to describe God's unconditional love for everyone.
Some Christians believe that they can be saved through grace alone - they don't need to do good deeds.
So Christians thought if you believe in Jesus, you will automatically go to heaven
The Incarnation
What does 'incarnation' mean?
Incarnation means when god became flesh (meat). In Spanish, Carne means meat.
Was Jesus the Son of God?
:point_right:: In the Gospels, Jesus does not say he is the Son of God in the bible until his trial
:point_right: He tells his disciples not to call him by this term, possibly because it might mean they would be accused of blasphemy
:point_right: He preferred to use the term 'Son of Man' which was not controversial
:point_right: This way he could not fulfil his mission without it being cut short too early
Sin
SIN: Any action or thought that separates humans from God, or behaviour which is against God's law
ORINGINAL SIN: A doctrine that says that everyone is born with an inbuilt urge to bad things.
The Crucifixion
The story of the Crucificxion
Jesus is forced to carry his cross to Golgotha, the place of his crucifixion, but Simon of Cyrene, a passer-by, is made to carry it when Jesus becomes exhausted.
At Golgotha, Jesus is offered wine mixed with myrrh to reduce his discomfort but he does not take it.
The soldiers take his clothes and gamble to decide who gets what.
Jesus is crucified in the morning alongside two criminals, who are nailed to crosses either side of him. Many passers-by insult and mock Jesus.
At noon, darkness settles over the land. Then, at three o’clock in the afternoon, Jesus cries out, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”, meaning My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
At the moment of Jesus’ death, the curtain of the temple rips in two from top to bottom. A roman soldier who witnesses Jesus' death exclaims, Surely this man was the Son of God!
