There is no culture without a sense of place
culture is dependent on place
culture differs from place to place - the context of place creates different cultures and place meaning
people have different experiences of place - each person have different attachments and feelings towards place
Culture is created through different mediums
media
shopping
digital geographies
geographies of music
globalisation
globalisation means that you don't have to go to that place to experience culture, cultures have become more widespread and you can access them from anywhere - turkish barbers, different religious buildings. people set up their cultures in that place without their associated sense of place
compared to previous times, there has been a progression of culture and the spread of culture. the link between culture and sense of place has eroded
sense of place is a prerequisite to culture, this is no longer true. the same culture can be experienced in multiple different places. people can experience culture and have affiliations with that culture without ever being in that place.
religion
religious culture is more tied to place - Mecca is the base of culture --> more closely related to culture, the link is less likely to be severed. can be strong relations to Mecca from London but those people still travel to Mecca for pilgrimages
people believe their culture is tied to that particular part of land
people can move away from a particular ethnic enclaves a pocket of a culture in a particular place - a group of muslims in London. people want to be close to other people from their culture and be near to their place of worship
religious culture is arguably harder to sever from culture than racial culture. Mecca is very important to Muslim people and they cannot remove this connection to that sense of place and culture
forms of media
social media - means you can experience places without ever being there - experienced vs media places
sense of virtual place - people thousands of miles away and participating in that culture without physically being there. No longer have to travel to places to experience them
people in a culture don't ever have to be in the same place to share a culture because they can do it in a virtual place
Consumerism / clothes
culture can be through the clothes that we wear and the way we associate ourselves - it doesn't have to be associated to a sense of place
the clothes we wear happen to reflect the ways in which we identify ourselves
main argument
load of bollocks
globalisation, media and mass migration has meant that we dont have to associate ourselves with that sense of place to experience the culture
exposure to other cultures - experience cultures regardless of where we are.
can feel the affiliation of that culture without ever experiencing that place - children born to immigrant parents
migration, consumerism, media and travel can bring a culture together without those people ever going there
relatively recent phenomena, globalisation has changed this over the past decades - previously culture was linked to place and sense of place
idea of culture
the idea of culture is being diluted, british culture is inherently multicultural now, the idea of a singular culture in a singular place no longer exists
