Creating Assessments for learning
assesment methods
observations
watching students in games or activities to asses where there mathematical abilities are at
questions
asking students about their work that probes their thinking as well as makes them reflect on their reasoning
interviews
a way of combining questions and observations, one on one interview with a student allowing them to demonstrate what path their brains take when answering questions and solving problems
tasks
having students complete certain activities to see what path they take. this may include having them write a description of the concept and how they implemented it.
integrating assessment into instruction
main assessment types
summative
sum of learning (measurement of learning)
post lesson or chapter test
formative
check for understanding (assessment of learning)
formative assessment process
identify the goal for learners
identify where learners are
identify parts to reach the goal
fist of 5, thumbs up thumbs down
what should be assessed
conceptual understanding and procedural fluency
students can demonstrate how they know concepts in more than one wayq2
competence and adaptive reasoning
using strategies and problem solving techniques to solve mathematical questions
using logic and understood mathematical concepts rationalize and reason of your answer
proof and explanations
having the knowledge to explain and communicate your reasoning
being able to express your reasoning via models, graphs, expressions.
making connections between concepts and materials to help support your ides and understanding of mathematics
productive disposition
students ability to persevere
Rubric, tests, and grading
rubrics
allows students to see what targets they should hit in their work and gives the teacher a guide line to grade off of.
generic
task specific
tests
a form of assessment that allows teachers to see many types of data
design them to demonstrate and preform the processes or concepts in several different ways
grades
a statistic that shows what level a student has achieved in a particular area of study
can be somewhat subjective,
should take a holistic approach to calculating a grade at the end of a marking period
student self assessment
can be done in a variety of ways including exit tickets and pretests
how well the student believes they themselves have learned and used the material
can be seen when linking data from grades or test results to interviews and observations
