Concept Map: Types of Perfusion Disorders
Ventilation-Perfusion Mismatching
Disease Examples:
Pulmonary Embolism (PE): Blockage of a pulmonary artery prevents blood flow to parts of the lung.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Impaired airflow, causing ineffective ventilation.
Treatment:
Pulmonary Embolism: Anticoagulants, thrombolytics, or surgery.
COPD: Bronchodilators, corticosteroids, oxygen therapy.
Impaired Circulation
Disease Examples:
◦ Atherosclerosis: Narrowing of the arteries due to plaque buildup.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Reduced blood flow to the limbs.
Treatment:
Atherosclerosis: Statins, lifestyle changes, surgery (e.g., angioplasty).
PAD: Antiplatelet agents, exercise, surgery (e.g., bypass).
Inadequate Cardiac Output
Disease Examples:
Heart Failure (HF): The heart is unable to pump effectively.
Myocardial Infarction (MI): Blockage of coronary arteries leading to damage to the heart muscle.
Treatment:
Heart Failure: Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers.
Myocardial Infarction: Thrombolytics, angioplasty, CABG surgery.
Excessive Perfusion Demands
Disease Examples:
Sepsis: Widespread infection causing systemic vasodilation and increased demand.
Hyperthyroidism: Increased metabolic rate raises the body’s need for oxygen and nutrients.
Treatment:
Sepsis: Antibiotics, vasopressors, fluids.
Hyperthyroidism: Antithyroid drugs, beta-blockers, surgery.
