Awakening; a moment of becoming aware of something, often deep or spiritual sense
Edna's Awakening - Her awakening is the gradual, transformation of her becoming aware of her desires. This allows her to understand her want to be independent and aware of her dissatisfactions in her life, specifically her roles as a wife and mother. This conscious awakening allows her to find new values in life by leaving her husband and kids to become the woman she wants to be. However, it tragically ends with her conscious decision to go into the ocean knowing she could not swim.

Breaking stereotypes
The term woke is modernly associated with the concept of politics. The term often refers to progressive movements that are trying to break stereotypes allowing for individuals to express and be themselves.
The term awakening is similar in a sense as it is the state of becoming conscious and alert. This term often relates to the idea of action as once an individual becomes aware of an idea they often advocate for this.
Both in the perspective of a political view and a general view Edna is awake and woke as she is advocating to breaking the stereotypical idea of women in her society. Even though she isn't gather thousands of followers currently she demonstrates a path that allows for women to understand they can be who they want to be. Although she is a mother she leaves her family to find herself and her purpose in life rather than being bound by a chain of mothering. This illustrates the idea of a progressive movement as Edna has awakened to her realization of being woke as she wants to find her purpose, something that wasn't common for women in the society when this text was written.
The book title is Awakening which is the adjective of being awake. The book describes Edna's awakening or realization of finding her purpose in society. As she breaks the stereotypes of the idea of women and mother she being to create a new hope for women in their lives.

Paving the Way
In the political aspect of woke an individual paves the way from new generations by advocating for a social injustice they have became aware of. Also from the understanding of woke being a progressive movement it connects to the concept of wake that is leaving a trail.
Edna leaves her own trail by paving a path for women to find their purpose. She paves a way for women to being more than just a wife and a mother by being one of the first to step into the light and the view of the public by leaving her husband and kids so she could do the things she wanted to do. Her actions show an extreme amount of courage by emphasising the abnormality of it all.

At the end of the book Edna has her own tragic death meaning there will mostly be a wake that follows. However, besides that Edna wakes herself from the understand of wanting to better herself by doing things for herself rather than for the expectations o society.
Woke
Definition
Original Connotation: Word to describe the alertness of an individual to social injustice or awareness a societal issue.
Edna's realization of societal expectations of genders. This is why she can be an example of woke as she becomes and advocate for the social injustices of women by 'pathing' the way for women to be who they want to be rather than just a mother. During this time period it was abnormal for someone to be raised by a single parent nevermind the a women leaving her husband and kids.
Modern Connotation: sarcastic word used to criticize the democratic policies and opinions on different societal issues. The term is often used to mock the progressive movement of inclusion.
