Global food security: More production or better distribution?
General theories
Modernization theory
The social sciences view development as the progression of a society's human values, culture, and technology.
Method of analysis
Geographic factors
The geographic location of societies, affected by policies such as the usage of different crops, is associated with a range of other domestic/international and human resources that negatively affect societal development and food security.
The number of animal species that can be domesticated became significantly reduced in Eurasia.
Political capital influences which plants and animals can be cultivated in regions ranging from China to distant Amazonian tribes in Brazil.
Capital and its forms
Political capital affects trade routes between tribal customs and more in the national and global structure.
Human capital is a nation’s human power, its skills, knowledge, and experience that can be used to control other society’s valuable physical capital.
Human capital affects trade; influence between different nations has land costs, oil production and machinery, taxes, and tax cuts.
Results and discussion
The study reveals that global food security is a complex process that is not fixed.
Food production does not seem to be the main issue; food factors such as distribution and environmental changes change more with influence.
Economic and infrastructure are important factors such as a broader approach that societies need; economic and political factors decide.
Summary of conclusions
The World Bank proposes a 50% increase in food production to ensure global food security by 2050.
Statistics have increased agricultural production and the increased output that produces the food. However, the distribution of the food plays a more important role in food security.
In short, focusing on agricultural production alone does not solve the global food security.
Distribution and other factors need to be addressed to ensure that everyone has access to the food they need.
