The French Conspiracy
The French aimed to turn Điện Biên Phủ into the strongest entrenched group in Indochina.
Điện Biên Phủ was the central stronghold where the French concentrated a large force.
In December 1953, the French reinforced Điện Biên Phủ with an interconnected system of strongholds and a solid defensive line.
Our Strategy
Early March 1954: Preparations completed, and on March 13, 1954, the attack on Điện Biên Phủ began.
December 1953: Decision to launch the Điện Biên Phủ campaign, encircle, and attack the French.
Mobilized 55,000 troops, weapons, supplies, logistics, large artillery, guns, and ammunition.
Battle Progression
Phase 1 (March 13 - March 17, 1954):
Our forces attacked Him Lam, Độc Lập, and Bản Kéo, destroying the French strongholds.
Phase 2 (March 30 - April 26, 1954):
We advanced, capturing more strongholds and weakening the French forces.
Phase 3 (May 1 - May 7, 1954):
A full-scale assault was launched, leading to the destruction of the French command headquarters.May 7, 1954: The French surrendered, marking the victorious conclusion of the campaign.
Results
16,200 enemy troops eliminated.
Numerous military weapons and equipment destroyed.
Significance
Completely crushed the French’s strongest entrenched group.
Delivered a decisive blow to the French colonial invasion.
Changed the course of the Indochina War.
Created favorable conditions for diplomatic negotiations, forcing the French to sign the Geneva Agreement (1954).
