Designing Chosen Character (Idea 3 )
Step 1 : Using an online software to design/sketch character viirtually.
Software Used: Blender, ZBrush, or Procreate (for 2D sketches)
Dimensions: Set reference scale (e.g., 5 - 7 cm tall for the torso of figure and same amount for bottom half along with 3 cm for face.)
Final Output: Digital sketch/model with front, side, and back views
Step 2: Finalising sketch and gather materials(clay, carving tools and more).
Sketch Size: Full-body reference on A4 paper
Materials Needed:
Clay: Air-dry or polymer clay for sculpting
Tools: Carving tools, sculpting knives, sandpaper
Wires: Steel wire for the armature (around 1.5 mm thick)
Step 3: Watching videos online to learn how to mold the clay.
Research: Watch tutorials on shaping clay, smoothing surfaces, and adding details
Practice: Small test sculptures before working on the final piece
Step 5:Start by creating the face structure using the modeling clay and slowly shaping it into a relaistic face.
Face Details:
Start with a rough shape, then refine features (eyes, nose, lips)
Use fine sculpting tools for small details
Body Proportions: Ensure symmetry by using measurements from the reference sketch
Step 4: Use steel wires to create basic shape of human figure(top part)
Wire Armature:
Material: Steel wire (bendable but sturdy)
Structure: Basic human shape with extended arms and legs
Support: Attach to a wooden or anyother base for stability
Step 6: Shaping the arms, legs and torso by putting sponge around wire to not waste clay and shaping around the sponge.
Shaping the Arms, Legs, and Torso:
Cover wire with clay, smoothing with fingers & sculpting tools
Use sponge as a filler for bulk without excess clay
Step 7: Finishing the shape and add first base layer of paint for the clothes, face and hair.
Paint Type: Acrylic paint for vibrant, long-lasting colors
Base Coat: Light layers to prevent cracks
Drying Time: Let each layer dry before applying details
+Step 8: Add tiny details and finishing the painting part. Touch up the clay parts and the character is made !
Textures & Patterns: Fine brushes for small details like clothing textures
Sealing the Paint: Use a matte or gloss varnish to protect the finish.(optional)
Touch-Ups: Adjust any imperfections before final display or picture.
