Symptoms: include fatigue, glossitis, heartburn/gastritis, paresthesias, weakness, abnormal reflexes (either hyporeflexic or hyperreflexic), and an unsteady gait.
Pernicious anemia is caused by autoantibodies that target intrinsic factor and gastric parietal cells, resulting in decreased or nonexistent intrinsic factor production. Intrinsic factor binds vitamin B12 in the stomach and is required to facilitate its uptake in the terminal ileum.
